Close your eyes and picture your dream vacation in the Bahamas. Are you imagining waves lapping on the shore of a postcard-perfect beach, feeling the sun kiss your skin as you sip a delicious cocktail (possibly out of a coconut)? It’s true, a trip to the Bahamas can include this fabulous fantasy – but you’re selling yourself short if you stop there.
The Bahamas are a treasure trove of exciting new things to try. After all, one of the best parts of travel is experiencing new things, whether that’s sampling the local rum or diving into a shipwreck. There’s a lot on offer in this Caribbean paradise – the only problem will be deciding what to add to your itinerary. We’ve narrowed it down for you with our top ten things to try in the Bahamas.
Walk the Plank – The Bahamas were home to some of the most fearsome pirates of the Caribbean. Visit Pirates of Nassau, an interactive museum experience, where you can step back in time and onboard a pirate ship! This may sound like it’s for kids, but trust us – it’s fun for swashbucklers of all ages.
Eat Like a Local – Ten minutes west of Nassau, this brightly colored collection of buildings by the sea is food heaven. Try it all: conch salad, fried fish, lobster tails – all seasoned to perfection. Like it spicy? Medium? Mild? You’ll find something for every palate – be sure to come hungry.
Catch Dinner – Inspired to catch your own? There are tons of deep-sea fishing tours to join where you can catch your own dinner to impress the family. For something a bit more advanced, try bonefishing, a type of shallow-water fly fishing popular in the Bahamas.
Swim with the Fishes – If you prefer swimming with fish as opposed to catching them, then you’re in luck. With an abundance of pristine coral reefs, shipwrecks, and sandbars to choose from, you could easily spend a whole day in the water. Be sure to check out Ocean Atlas, the world’s largest underwater statue, near New Providence.
Be Like Bond – How about swimming in James Bond’s footsteps? Just off the coast of New Providence lie two shipwrecks used in the films Thunderball and Never Say Never Again. Sitting in relatively shallow water, these wrecks are accessible for beginner divers.
Make Friends with Pigs – If swimming with fish is too boring for you, how about swimming with pigs? Head to Pig Beach (aka Big Major Cay) where the only inhabitants are herds of wild pigs. However they got there (we’ll let the locals tell you, as stories vary), these little piggies are friendly and love to swim with new friends!
Walk the Boardwalk – After all that time in the water, dry off with a walk around this stunning national park. With one of the largest underwater cave systems in the world, this park boasts a vast selection of nature trails and boardwalks, including viewing platforms over some of the underwater cave entrances.
Did someone say RUM? – Feeling thirsty from all the excitement? Head to John Watling’s Distillery in downtown Nassau. Take a tour, learn how this iconic beverage is made, and perhaps even sample the goods. Be sure to visit the gift shop and take a bottle home with you!
Shopping Time – Hit up the Straw Market for all your souvenir shopping. This charming and vibrant open-air market features fantastic and gorgeous straw craft souvenirs as well as wood carvings and local artisan goods.
Make it Pink – After all that, if you still just want to lie on a beach, at least make it a beach that will look good on the ‘gram. Pink Sand Beach on Harbor Island is world-renowned for its jaw-dropping beach which is, you guessed it, pink. Hop a ferry to Harbor Island and spend the day lounging on this breathtaking stretch of pink sand.
However you choose to spend your time in the Bahamas, you’re bound to make memories to last a lifetime. Need help planning your itinerary? Get in touch and let’s plan your next unforgettable island getaway!
